From the unexpected backstage of the fashion world to an intimate family archive — two exhibitions opening the new home of the Institute of Photography Fort explore how photography connects professional and personal life. On April 22, a triple opening: Life on Assignment by Kuba Dąbrowski, Family Trilogy by Christopher Anderson and Marion Durand, and the new, larger IFF venue.

Christopher Anderson & Marion Durand
Family Trilogy

Family Trilogy presents a new iteration of three of Christopher Anderson’s (Canada, b. 1970) books. Anderson — author of one of the latest widely discussed photo sessions from the White House for the iconic Vanity Fair series, an internationally acclaimed photographer who for years covered armed conflicts, among others for The New York Times, and worked on assignments for publications such as The New Yorker — created the photographs shown at IFF after deciding to step away from war reporting and to start a family.

He continued photographing constantly, documenting his growing family across different cities, situations, and moods. The first series, SON, is a reflection on fatherhood following the birth of his first son, Atlas — “a record of love and a meditation on the seasonal nature of life.” PIA is a playful exploration of the father–camera–daughter triangle, while MARION is a love letter to his life partner and the chapter that closes the entire story.

Family Trilogy is also the result of revisiting these projects through the eyes of Marion — Anderson’s partner and a long-time photo editor for magazines including Newsweek, Bright, and Kometa. She expands the exhibition with her own perspective: as the subject, mother, and companion for whom the camera could be both ally and adversary. Finally, she completes the story with her own photographic notes from their family life. This is the first presentation of this version of the work in Poland and only the second worldwide — created as a collaborative family project.

Kuba Dąbrowski
Life on Assignment

Assignments give photographers — especially those working in fashion — access to worlds they would otherwise never enter. At first exclusive, these environments gradually become familiar. Returning to the same cities encourages a sense of temporary belonging. Faces of fellow photographers turn into faces of friends. You no longer need a map; you have your local bar and favorite bookstore just around the corner from the hotel you always stay in. A new routine begins to take shape.

Kuba Dąbrowski has become part of this parallel reality, where the line between assignment and home begins to blur. Everything is temporary, yet deeply real — much like his photographs. And no one could tell this story more palpably than he can.

Dąbrowski is one of the few photographers working regularly for the world’s oldest fashion newspaper. During and beyond his assignments, he turns his lens away from red carpets and headline events. A selection from this archive of professional travels will be presented to the public for the first time, in collaboration with curator — and a familiar face from those “business trips” — Piotr Niepsuj.
