The project was initially conceived as an intimate portrait of a relationship rebuilt after years apart. Everything changed after a phone call from “Her”, the other partner of “X”, the man with whom the artist was in a relationship. The conversation abruptly exposed a year-long deception and triggered a process of revisiting hundreds of private photographs, most of them taken on a mobile phone: spontaneous images of shared trips, everyday life, tenderness and intimacy.
Hiraldo Voleau did not stop at re-examining the archive. She reconstructed it, finding a way to make it public without revealing the identity of the person at its centre. The result is a remarkable project that asks questions on boundaries between reclaiming control over one’s own story and revenge.
The project was originally published as a photobook by the acclaimed Mörel Books and quickly sold out. As an exhibition, it has been presented at venues including the International Center of Photography, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris, Photoforum in Biel, Switzerland, and La Nombreuse in Brussels. The Warsaw presentation of Another Love Story at IFF will become another version of this evolving narrative – another attempt to rearrange a relationship that resisted any single perspective from the very beginning.

EXT. – NIGHT
The sun is setting over the sea in front of two lovers, Karla Hiraldo Voleau and him, “X”. Together, they are living out a love story. A sincere one, she believes. Their meetings and their affection have lasted for almost a year. There are plenty of photos to prove it.
INT. – DAY
A series of events is about to challenge the bounds of belief. Karla gets in touch with a stranger, who seems closer to her than she realised—referred to as “She”—who turns out to have been in a relationship with X for several years. X has been leading a double life.
The realisation is brutal for the two women as they uncover a web of lies spanning several cities, several beds, several lives. The dual violence—of the blindness and of the revelation—shakes the photographer to the core and upends her relationship with reality. Another Love Story becomes a process of reclaiming her lived experience through autofiction. Drawing on more than 600 original photographs taken during her relationship with X, the artist reimagines the narrative as if editing a film. She casts Pierre, an actor, in the role of X—preserving X’s anonymity—and re-enacts a past intimacy exactly as it took place. She reconstructs the settings around them, which include Switzerland, Paris and Lisbon. She travels through these places for a second time, as if on a quest for truth.
In examining this narrative from the moment of the betrayal and in retracing her steps, conducting an autopsy through every gesture, word, promise, and image she carried with her on her mobile phone and in her film cameras, Karla Hiraldo Voleau dissects her own story. For her, as for so many others, the pain comes from the loss of control over her narrative and from the emotional abuse. Reconstructing the facts is thus an intentional attempt at healing, channelled through photography. The artist speaks as a woman, in an “I” that hides nothing: not the bodies, desires, messages, or vulnerabilities. The private becomes public, the behind-the-scenes takes centre stage, and the records—photographs, text messages, route maps, notes—become works of a reality battered by fiction, or a fiction disarmed by reality
Karla Hiraldo Voleau is a French-Dominican artist based in Switzerland. Her bold and uncompromising photographic-performative projects have been presented at international venues including the International Center of Photography in New York, Paris Photo, Art Basel or the MEP in Paris. She graduated ECAL (Switzerland) with highest honours in photography, and her work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Der Greif, British Journal of Photography, Camera Austria, Dazed or T Magazine. Her projects have also received numerous awards and grants, including recognition from the Swiss Design Awards, the Recommended Olympus Fellowship or PICTO Talent Prize.
